Day One of Insomnia 52 kicked off to a start bigger and better than any year before and with over 2,000 people predicted through the doors on just the first day alone
Some are sceptical of the so-called “gaming festival” and what it brings to the table, but after just day one at the event the team at multiplay have pulled off a fantastic job in making it really feel like a true festival. As in any festival there is wave after wave of interesting things going on: from free handouts of pro graphic cards to the meet and great where many of the best European you tubers met their fans.
So much to do that you can’t fit it in just one day!
If that was not for you then the exhibition hall is where it’s at – the day brought the likes of 2k games with both Borderlands – the pre sequel and Evolve (two fantastic games which will soon be followed by developer interviews from DoubleUpGaming) Jagex also showed their faces with their new open world MMO, Transformers Universe with whom we will be talking to their brand director later today.
Yet if that is not enough for you there were plenty of events happening on stage – from the opening ceremony to the Mindcrack team live on stage playing PVP with fans. Behind the main stage area you could find many people lining up to play on some of the retro games, go head to head on the table top games or even visit the Yog’sCast.
“A stampede of avid gamers clawing at each other”
The opening ceremony was filled to the brim with many people hoping to get hold of the masses of loot being thrown out on stage. From what was a calm and civilised ceremony, it very quickly turned into a stampede of avid gamers clawing at each other for that one chance to get hold of an empty cardboard box (yes people really did want to get hold of an empty cardboard box….) With all laughs aside the ceremony featured many of people’s most favourite idols and really got the crowd going for the rest of the day.
The True Legends Lounge
Within the legends lounge and Minecraft zone attendees found themselves queueing for that one chance to meet their idols – for most this was the first time that they had even seen their you tubers’ in flesh making it a moment to truly treasure. By far Syndicate’s meet and greet was inundated by masses of people hoping to get a glimpse, signing or even a hug from the UK’s number one subscribed You tuber. In fact so many people wanted to meet their him that staff at insomnia had to limit the amount to only 200 (only a fraction of the masses that wanted to meet)
A Night to remember
The night ended with many of the weekend festival holders attending the insomnia party held in the large outdoor tents taking up most of the Ricoh football field. Although Radio One DJ Zane lowe could not attend the replacement of DJ Fresh was just as good or could even be considered an improvement.
